Christmas is nearly here! But what is there to see and do in Sherwood Forest and Nottingham to get you in the festive mood? If you’re planning a break in Nottinghamshire, check out all the great Christmas events in Sherwood Forest during your stay.
Our luxury lodge park in Nottinghamshire is located close to the famous Sherwood Forest. This ancient piece of woodland, alive with nature, history and folklore is a place you and you and your family can quite happily spend a whole day in, playing and exploring.
Open throughout the winter period, the visitor centre is the best place to start your day out. It’s home to a friendly café, the Sherwood Shop and a welcome area where you can pick up trail guides. Head there in November and you can join the Christmas events in Sherwood Forest, making your own Christmas Wreath using natural materials such as evergreens, holly, ivy and pine cones, collected directly from the forest. There’s also a fun playground for kids and the whole area is dog friendly.
Another lovely outdoor space to spend the day is Thoresby Park. Explore the extensive grounds or visit the attractions and shops, such as the Victorian Courtyard and you’ll find working crafts people, shops, licensed cafe, military museum and the acclaimed Gallery featuring regional, national and international artists. If you’re looking for some interesting Christmas gifts, then there are some nice independent shops that sell home ware and gifts. Admission is free, with free car parking and disabled access.
If you have younger children that need entertaining then head to Robin Hood’s Wheelgate Park for it’s Christmas Experience.
A great Christmas event in Nottinghamshire, this theme park is transformed into an enchanted wonderland, complete with a giant Christmas tree, during December and you can visit the Elves in animal farm and help feed Santa’s Reindeer. Plus there are festive workshops and plenty of activities. This theme park also has the UK’s largest indoor play centre and Santa’s grotto runs throughout December. The park is open 10am – 5pm, except Christmas Eve when the park closes 3pm.

Another place to have an audience with Father Christmas is at the English Heritage site, Bolsover Castle. This Christmas event in Nottingham is held between 30 Nov – Sun 22 Dec 2019 on weekends only and tickets to see Father Christmas are £5 – this includes a small present and pre booking is required.
Whilst you are there, you can also wander the lavish rooms of the Little Castle, explore the romantic ruined terrace range, and delight in the views from the wall walk. Start your visit in the exhibition in the Riding House then run wild in extensive grounds (and fun play area).

For more outdoor adventure head to Clumber Park, a large National Trust parkland with woodland walks, a scenic lake, wildlife and a Gothic chapel. Once the country estate of the Dukes of Newcastle, the house was demolished but there is much to explore around the grounds, including lots of wildlife. Christmas events in Clumber Park include Children’s Christmas Crafts in the Cafe, Story Time with Father Christmas and the Christmas Fancy Dress dog walk! Facilities are excellent here, with parking, cafes, gift shop, cycle hire (there’s over 20 miles of cycle routes around the park) and dogs are welcome.
